Schizophrenia Treatment

Schizophrenia is a chronic disabling mental illness causing much strain on both the patient and family. Psychiatric treatment has drastically improved in the past 30 years but still leaves countless patients suffering without relief. Dr. Janikula and Dr. McNeal offer hope by using homeopathy to manage schizophrenia and fill the need for effective treatment when conventional medicine falls short.

Homeopathy has offered hope for schizophrenia since 1792. Hahnemann the founder of homeopathy was the first physician to advocate for humane treatment of mental illness. Before Hahnemann patients with mental illness were sent to asylums, chained and treated harshly, including various forms of torture. The prevailing belief was that somebody mentally sick was possessed by some entity and these sufferers needed to be chained and beaten to free the evil spirits. Hahnemann advocated kindness and compassion along with the use of homeopathic principles. Since Hahnemann’s time the most skilled physicians using homeopathy have reported resulted cure rates of 80% or more.

Case Example

Peter (name changed), a 31 y/o male, was referred to our clinic by a colleague for help with moodiness, irritability, mental fatigue and difficulty thinking. Peter has never sought out conventional care and never had a formal diagnostic workup, but has consulted with other natural health practitioners. He currently lives with his mother and has been unemployed for the past 6 years. His worst symptom was irritability. Whenever Peter interacts with others he hears voices and misinterprets their comments to means something negative towards him. These misinterpretations and voices lead Peter to become extremely angry with violent, homicidal thoughts. He had been in legal trouble once but would not comment on why. He is further angered by a constant feeling he is targeted and kept from having anything in his life. He has elaborate theories on who is targeting him and this contributes frequently to his anger

Peter has obsessive behavior with strong fear of germs and contamination in food. He would wash all his grocery packaging, on arriving home and was afraid it was contaminated or poisoned. He also had insomnia, long lasting nasal symptoms, frequent urination, and some digestive issues. His prior treatment was mildly effective, improving his energy and slightly with mood. He was not helped with voices or anger.

On taking Peter’s case I quickly diagnosed him with paranoid schizophrenia. I had a very optimistic prognosis for Peter and began homeopathic treatment. He was given Arsensicum album 30C once a day and had immediate results. At his 3 week follow up he was no longer getting irritated and had not misinterpreted any interactions. He still felt targeted but said it does not seem to emotionally bother him as much. His sleep, energy, and clarity of mind were all much improved.

Peter was treated for one year and need increasing potencies of Arsencium album. By one year he was free from all symptoms both mentally and physically. He was discharged and advised to call if there were any troubles. I have checked in with Peter in the past several years and he has no recurrence of symptoms.

Cases like Peters show the power of homeopathy to quickly restore health in a permanent, gentle way.

Often the most challenging aspect of managing patients with schizophrenia is maintaining continued long term care. On beginning treatment, the most ill patients have difficulty making follow up visits, leaving Dr. Janikula and Dr. McNeal helpless to ensure continued improvement. A loving family member or friend is often the most important part of a team approach to keep appointments and update our doctors on changes in health and mental status. With a loving family member this obstacle is removed.

Prognosis for patients with schizophrenia is much higher for patients during earlier periods of the disease. As the disease progresses it tends to become more permanent and more challenging to treat. This does not mean patients suffering from schizophrenia 20 years cannot be treated, but our success rate drops the longer a person has been diagnosed.

Dr. Janikula and Dr. McNeal are starting a pilot trial to study the effects of homeopathic treatment on 30 consecutive cases of schizophrenia. This will be the first study of its kind and will evaluate the real world effectiveness of homeopathy in schizophrenia. If you would like to be part of the trial please contact Fountainhead Clinic.
